Kidepo is in the located in the extreme north eastern corner of Uganda in the Karamoja region and borders with Sudan and Kenya. Kidepo Valley National Park covers an area of 1,442 km². Due to its remote location this park is less visited, though it is one of Uganda’s most spectacular parks. It harbours scenery un surpassed in any other park in East Africa.

The park boasts an extensive avifauna. 465 species have been recorded. There are also about 80 species of mammals of which 28 are not found in any of the other Ugandan parks. Some of the wild game in this park include; the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), Leopard (Panthera pardus), Lion (Panthera leo), Bat eared fox (Otocyon megalotis), Caracal (Felis caracal), Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyena), Lesser Kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis, Elephant (loxodanta Africana), Beisa Oryx (Oryx gazelle), Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), Burch ells Zebra and several Antelopes.

Access:
By Road: Kidepo Valley National Park is 840km from Kampala and although the journey can be tough, taking up to two days, the diverse landscape past makes the journey worthwhile.
There are three routes that can be used by road.

  1. Kampala via Karuma – Lira Kotido – Kidepo is around 705 kms.
  2. Kampala via Mbale – Sironko – Kotido – Kidepo is around 740 km.
  3. Kampala via Mbale – Soroti – Moroto – Kidepo is around 792 km.

A 4 x 4 wheel drive vehicle is recommended for any of the routes to Kidepo.
By Air: Chartered flights are available from Entebbe to Kidepo Valley National Park headquarters.
Accommodation:
Recommended facility: Apoka Rest Camp though it is important to note that the park also runs a self catering hostel comprising of 14 Bandas’ each with two beds.
